Trampoline Accidents

Trampoline accidents in the United States and in other countries are a common occurrence. The number of trampoline accidents per year in the United States in 2003 was 211,000. Serious injuries can and do happen because of attempting tricks and gymnastic moves. A trampoline accident may affect the arms, face, head, legs and neck. Those at greatest risk are younger children, particularly those under six. They can be more susceptible for fractures. Older children are likely to have sprains or strained muscles. Trampoline major accidents can result in death and paralysis - the worst-case scenarios. Between 1990 and 3003, 11 people died from trampoline accidents.

More trampoline accidents occur when two people are jumping together on the trampoline. One jumper may collide with the other or, the movement of one jumper will throw the other jumper off the trampoline or cause them to land incorrectly. The person likely to sustain injury is the lighter of the two or more participants (The statistics say five times more likely). This is one reason why more than one person on most trampolines is not a safe or healthy action. It also explains why health experts, pediatrics and concerned officials and groups stress only one person should be on a trampoline at a time and there must always be a trained spotter on duty.

Other accidents occur because the trampolines are poorly maintained or improperly positioned. Do not place a trampoline close to concrete or a hard surface. Keep trampolines away from trees, poles, fences and other sharp and pointy constructions. To ignore this is to encourage an accident.

Be sure to keep your trampoline in peak condition. Do not ignore tears, rips or holes in the bed or mat. Be sure the springs are strong and not stretched out of shape. Place safety padding over all the exposed areas and do not allow it to wear out. If you can, place the trampoline in the ground. This will lessen some accidents but not erase all chances of any occurring. Be careful where you place ladders and other trampoline accessories and do not allow things like safety enclosures to provide your and other users with a false sense of complete security.

Trampoline accident pictures or trampoline accident photos are not pretty sights. The victims are bruised and battered. Nothing is more pathetic than seeing an injured child. While there are several funny trampoline accident sites and several funny trampoline accident videos posted, the “funny” aspect is dubious. Remember trampolines are a good form of exercise, but do not forget they can be dangerous if not properly used.
