Gymnastics

humankind. It is both a sport and a recreational form of activity. The men who invented gymnastics, Johann Frederick Gutts Math and Frederick Ludwig Jahn, intended the sport to supply a system of exercises for improving the body’s strength and ability. These two men provided the basics for the sport used by gymnasts worldwide today. Math designed the parallel bars and the pommel horse. The latter piece of equipment both male and female gymnasts use in executing the various types of gymnastic vaults. In coaching gymnastics, an individual may teach simple ways to leap off the gymnastics vault, including the half-turn, pike and tuck.

The basics for the sport include a fun grounding in such things as tumbling gymnastics and floor exercise elements. Gymnastic floor routine basics consist of back and forward rolls, cartwheels, and handstands as well as conditioning for such physical characteristics as strength and flexibility. The understanding of these elements is essential whether you are a female or male gymnast.

The basic for boys’ gymnastics - tumbling or floor exercise skills, vault techniques and parallel bars, requires extra upper body strength for the gymnastic rings and side horse. The importance of strength and control is obvious in their greatest test, the side-vault pommel horse. For female competitors, the greatest challenge lies with the gymnastics balance beam. To escape pressure and revive some of the enjoyment of this sport, while honing certain required skills, many gymnasts take time out to enjoy some time on gymnastics trampolines.

The basic apparel for both male and female gymnasts is shorts and a tee-short. Gymnastic shorts, however, may be replaced with a body suit and leotards or tights. In competition, both genders wear different outfits for separate routines. The colors and materials of the team costume are the same for all members. Some clubs require you to buy the designated outfit upon joining. Such articles usually sport the gymnastic logos of the club, association or school they represent. A competitor may wear them in region 8 gymnastics competition – comprised of North and South Carolina as well as Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee or any other of the regions.

While it may be fun to watch gymnastic bloopers courtesy of YouTube or any of the other internet sites, do not forget gymnastics can be a dangerous sport. The Texas USA Gymnastics group, while encouraging women’s gymnastics throughout its mandated area of Texas, does not ignore the need for safety precautions. While International Gymnastics, Grasp and USA Gymnast may include cartoons and gymnastic poems, these magazines also provide useful information to maintain safety in practice and competition.
