Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a sport combining elegance, flexibility, grace and strength. It is also a training method used to help athletes obtain peak physical fitness. Gymnastics is open to males and females. In fact, it is one of the few genderless sports in terms of recognition of skills.

Females take part in four main events: the vault horse, the uneven bars, the balance beam and floor exercises. Male contenders enter six events: the side horse, the long horse or vault, the parallel bars, the rings and the floor exercises. In the floor exercise routines, only the female gymnastics have musical accompaniment. Other types of gymnastics include Rhythmic Gymnastics – a sport combining the graceful and skilful athletic movements of modern gymnastics with various props e.g. ball, hoop, ribbon, rope, and Artistic Gymnastics, a sport combining various skills on an apparatus. Other members of the gymnastics’ family include trampoline, sport acrobatics and tumbling.
